Chinatown Boardroom exhibits Yusuke Hanai's "Unexpected Colors," opening Sep. 3. According to the presenters, "this show will illustrate the colors one does not see all the time – unexpected colors; his inspiration stems from surfing, life and culture." Yusuke states “If various people mix together in the world who respect it and cooperate this will create new colors that I did not expect, the world overflows with more various colors, and I believe this will become beautiful.”

If you're attending ASR in San Diego, stop by the Board Builders Pavilionand check out the “Billabong Art of Shaping, Hawaii Edition,” where a dozen shapers including Jeff Bushman, Eric Arakawa, and Dick Brewer will showcase the talent of Hawaii-based shapers and craftsmen. ECO GUN JEFF BUSHMAN 10’2” x 20 1/2” x 3 1/2” August 2008

Jeff Bushman (Sunset Beach, Hawaii) has had more top three finishers in the Quiksilver Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational than any other shaper. This state-of-the-art gun is a tribute to big wave riders past and present. It also reflects the environmental consciousness that is critical to the future. Fifty percent of the fiberglass found in traditional boards has been replaced with organic hemp. The hemp is as strong as a layer of 6-ounce S-cloth. The use of sun-cure resin prevents 70 percent of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from escaping during the glassing process. These alternative materials take board building a step in the right direction. This surfboard is designed for Waimea, Sunset, Mavericks, Dungeons, Todos, and all the waves of consequence that inspire great watermen everywhere.

A silent auction will run for the first two days of ASR with a live auction starting at 3PM on Friday, September 5 to benefit the Liquid Nation Ball.

Surf contests, stand-up contests, a swim contest and a Hawaii Kai to Waikiki paddleboard race will take place in Waikiki all week, celebrating Duke Kahanamoku and fun in the ocean. The humpback whale is no longer threatened with extinction, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Meanwhile, the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus), fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) and sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis) all remain listed as Endangered. Chinatown Boardroom proudly presents August's Surf Discussion Series speaker, Crystal Thornburg and Dave Homcy: Crystal is an accomplished longboarder, and an all-around ocean athlete who races outrigger canoes, competes in long-distance swims and paddleboard races, kayaks, bodysurfs and freedives. Crystal is an ambassador for Patagonia as well as a dedicated environmentalist and philanthropist. When she is not traveling the globe she resides on the North Shore of Oahu. Dave has followed his passion for surf photography and cinematography working in the film industry for over 20 years. He has worked on notable surf movies such as “Surf Wise” Broke Down Melody” and most recently “Sliding Liberia”. Join Crystal and Dave as this dynamic duo talks about surfing, making surf films, and what really matters in life. The Surf Discussion Series creates a forum for people to meet and discuss surfing, culture and life.
